The SLO® along with one of our teachers with a passion for science conducted a fun sugar density activity where Gr. 3 students experienced how sugar plays a factor in densifying water. Students were placed into 3 teams: Puppies, Lions and tigers, each team given 3 cups with different levels of sugar, the same levels of water, and drops of different food coloring in each to differentiate between them. Students then poured about 50 drops from each cup into an empty bottle in order and immediately saw the colors divided, as some were more dense than other. This experiment taught the children that the higher amounts of sugar in a liquid makes it more dense and food coloring can easily show this as they level out when combined. They had a blast!
